Obituary for Clements F. Gerold

Clements F. Gerold, age 87 of Shakopee, formerly of Savage, entered eternal life on Wednesday, November 22, 2017, at Hidden Creek Assisted Living in Chaska, Minnesota.

Clem was always known to serve others. He started with the Savage Volunteer Fire Department. When he signed up, he was given leaky boots and a coat with holes in it. His first duty was to activate the siren so the other firefighters would be alerted of the fire calls. He served for 20 years, but his acts of service didn't end there.

Clem served his country in the United States Navy for 4 years during the Korean War. He was also very active at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church being an usher, lecture, communion distributor and doing nocturnal adoration. He organized the first “Marathon for Non-Public Schools" at St. John’s. He also helped distribute Christmas gifts for the church as Santa Claus sponsored by the Knights of Columbus.

Clem became a Knight of Columbus in 1948. In 1960, he chartered a new council, Prior Lake/Savage 4914, with his dad and served two terms as Grand Knight. In 1963, Clem joined the 4th Degree and served many chair positions, including Faithful Navigator. He was a member of the 4th Degree Hall of Fame and 3rd Degree Exemplification Team for 17 years. He also served as the State Membership Director and as District Deputy for four years.

He served his community by being a Boy Scout Leader for many years. In 1985, he traveled with a special needs troop to Philmont Scout Camp. He chaired the Red Cross Blood Mobile for Scott County for 7 years.

After retiring, in spite of his lack of eye sight, Clem took up a woodworking hobby of making tops and cars for children (big and small). He distributed over 2,300 tops throughout the US, Haiti, South America and Africa, just to name a few.

When Clem could no longer volunteer and serve others, God sent special people to serve Clem. Many thanks and blessings to Tyanne Breimhorst, Brad Haycraft, Kenny Friendschuh, Doug Barclay, Dave Badin, Pat Houlihan, John Hogen and Gloria Doerr for your time and special attention, rides to mass, prayed rosaries, listening ears, field trips and cold beers.

A special thank you to Allina Hospice and women of Hidden Creek that not only cared for Clem but loved him too.

Clem is survived by his wife, Terry; children, Claudia (John) Somerville, Tim (Cynthia), Lori (Mark) Reese, Lenny (Shauna) and Kris; grandchildren, Marie (Eric) Belter, Conor Hanrahan, Chase and Blake Gerold, Emma Grace, Jack and Marcella Reese, Claire and Drew Gerold. He is preceded in death by infant twins; parents, Edward and Mary; brothers and a sister.
