Obituary for Michelle Ann Stavros

Michelle Ann Stavros, age 51 of Shakopee, formerly of Mankato.

Born on April 13, 1966 in the small town of Winnebago, MN, the daughter of Joe and Marilyn (Becker) Dwyer. Michelle spent her childhood in a typical small town way where summer began every year on the last day of school. There were huge water balloon fights between neighborhoods, every day was spent at the community pool, the major transportation was your 10-speed bike and because neighbors watched out for neighbors, if you were up to no good, your parents would certainly be told! In the middle of her junior year of high school, her family moved to Mankato and Michelle finished her high school years at Mankato Loyola. She played volleyball and softball and cherished the friendships made in that brief time. Her friends from Loyola were some of her best and they were there for her in the end as well.

Michelle attended the College of St. Benedict where she earned her Bachelor’s degree in English. Her career in insurance began and ended with Allstate. Through her 25+ years at Allstate, she held a variety of roles and thoroughly enjoyed each of them. However, it was the team of people she was so fortunate to work with that made her time at Allstate memorable.

Michelle married Mark Stavros on April 11, 1992 and they created memories in all the places they lived: Savage, Atlanta, and Chicago before they set down roots in Shakopee to raise their two children, Meghan and Ben. Michelle loved her family completely. She enjoyed watching Meghan perform for many years in dance and later was proud to watch her give back to the community through her involvement in Bethel’s Love Your Melon campus crew. Michelle spent a lot of time at the hockey rink watching and cheering (sometimes loudly) for Ben and his teammates. She was able to check off one of her bucket list items this year: Watching Ben play high school hockey. She was so proud. It was at the rink where she met a group of people that would eventually become her “hockey family.” These folks, along with the Shakopee Lions Club, proved to Michelle that going back to the “small” town setting had been the right one. She was moved beyond words on October 28, 2016, when the community, friends and family came out to support their family as she put on her boxing gloves and fought her diagnosis of Stage IV colon cancer.

Michelle had fun no matter what she was doing as long as it was time spent with friends or family. She loved the lake and spent many summers with her extended family on the water and around the campfire. She loved spotting cardinals, blue jays, eagles...and it was the cardinal, in the end, that warned us of her passing.

Cancer may have invaded her body, but it didn’t win. She went on to LIVE with cancer as long as her body could take it. Her pain ended on March 8, 2018, as her spirit took flight. She is now in the loving arms of our Lord and will be there watching over us, smiling, cheering and encouraging us to keep moving on.

In addition to her husband, Mark and children, Meghan and Ben, Michelle is survived by parents, Joe and Marilyn Dwyer; sister, Lynn (Craig) Willmert; brother, Mike (Vicky) Dwyer; sisters-in-law, Deb (Dale) Breczinski, and Kim (Joe) Kochevar; brother-in-law, Mike (Peg) Stavros; dog, Abby; many nieces and nephews.
