Obituary for Scott William Vaupel

Scott W. Vaupel, age 40, of Shakopee, entered eternal life on Saturday, January 28th, 2017, surrounded in love by his wife and parents.

Scott was born on March 6th, 1976, in Redwood Falls, MN, to parents David and Donna Vaupel. He graduated from Lakeville High School in 1994 and the University of North Dakota in 2001 with a degree in Business. Scott married Kari Miller on June 21st, 2003 at Amo Lutheran Church, Storden, MN. They moved to Shakopee in 2001 and were blessed with three beautiful children. He worked for Schmitt Music for 6 years and then decided to stay at home full time to care for his three children.

Scott was active in Boy Scouts all of his life. He received his Eagle Scout Award in 1993. Later, he became a den leader in Shakopee, where he continued to enjoy scouting with his two sons.

His greatest passion was music. In high school, he received the distinguished Semper Fidelis Award for Musical Excellence from the US Marines and the Louis Armstrong Top Senior Jazz Award for musical achievement and incredible dedication to the high school band program. He was often requested to play Taps at military funerals when he was in high school. During his college years, Scott received the Firehall Theater Volunteer of the Year Award for sound and lighting expertise in Grand Forks, ND.

Scott had perfect pitch and played seven instruments proficiently. He and Kari founded Musicals with a Mission with other St. John’s members in 2008. He loved the fact that the family could do these musicals together: Scott recomposed and computerized the music, while serving as the Technical Director for Sound; Kari directed/choreographed/wrote the musicals; and Landon, Hogan and Kerris were all actors in the productions.

St. John’s was a very important part of his life. One of his greatest joys was singing with his friends in Higher Ground every Sunday and Wednesday. Scott donated much of his time and own money to set up the sound board and sound desk. You could always find Scott at the sound board during the church services.

Scott also had amazing technology and computer skills. A computer he designed became the advertisement for the computer company. Using his airplane pilot license, which he obtained in high school, he began flying drones. He was requested to produce aerial videos for Windom Industrial Park, Windom Hospital, realtors and businesses.

He loved the outdoors: hunting, fishing, camping and water sports. In 2013, the family purchased his beloved “Horton” motorhome. In four years the family took 20 memorable journeys across the United States and Canada.
Survived by wife, Kari; sons, Landon and Hogan; daughter, Kerris; parents Dave and Donna Vaupel; brother, Michael (Suze) Pullen; sisters, Cathy (Joe) Zander and Ann Marie Vaupel.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers all memorial donations be made to: St. John’s Lutheran Church Grand Piano Fund.
