Obituary for Robert "Bob" P. Monnens

Robert P. Monnens, age 94 of Shakopee, entered eternal life on Monday, September 24, 2018 at Friendship Manor Healthcare Center in Shakopee.
Bob is preceded in death by his wife, Lavonne; parents, Frank and Frances; four brothers, Ed, Clarence, Lee and Ken. He is survived by his six children, Bob, Tom (Linda), Rick (Ann), Paul (JoAnn), Lynn (Will Stier), Tim (Lynn); 14 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and his sister, Darlene (Jim) Meuwissen.
Bob was born on February 10, 1924 in Prior Lake Minnesota, the son of Frank and Frances (Menden) Monnens. He grew up on a farm outside of Shakopee where he learned his lifelong qualities of hard work and practicality. Bob went to Shakopee High School where he was a football standout. He was inducted into the Shakopee Athletic Hall of Fame in 2001.
Bob proudly served in the United States Army during World War II. He was stationed in the Pacific and fought with the 41st infantry division.
After returning from the service, on the ‘luckiest day of his life’, he met his life-time love, Lavonne Laddusaw. They courted at the dance hall and married on August 27, 1946. Bob and Lavonne created a home and raised six children together in Shakopee. Bob worked for Cargill doing river transportation in Savage for 40 years.
Bob loved playing cards, fishing, and Boston Terriers. He loved naming his Boston Terriers Peanuts. Bob enjoyed all sports, especially football and softball. He played fast pitch softball into his 40’s, watched his sons play the sport, and was involved in the Shakopee Umpire Association for almost 20 years.
During retirement, he worked many hours on his woodworking projects. His children, grandchildren, extended family, and the Shakopee community members have many treasured pieces created by Bob and marked ‘RPM’.
Bob was charming, funny, and loved deeply by his family. He will be often remembered, frequently quoted, and missed always, but the family is comforted in the knowledge that he is reunited with Lavonne.
